On June 10th, 2022, a routine traffic stop for illegal window tint took an unexpected turn. While checking the vehicle, an officer discovered two ice-cold malt beverages sitting right at the 18-year-old driver's feet. What should have been a simple equipment warning quickly escalated into a criminal arrest and a trip to the county jail for underage possession. >> Who else had alcohol? Not you? >> I was drinking earlier, too. >> So, just you? You're the only one that had alcohol? Well, that's awfully brave of you. >> No, it doesn't Thank you so very much. >> Thank you. How old is everybody else? >> I'm 18. >> 18? How old? 21? How old are you? >> 20. >> 20? What's in the cooler? I'm sorry? It's your beer? All of that's yours? Okay. Is the Twisted Tea up there yours, too? No? I didn't know if you bought it for him, or if it's yours, or you're sharing. No? Okay. Do you have your ID, sir? Your registration and your insurance. Put your stuff out of the car for me. Do you have like a wrap or a towel or something? >> No? >> No. >> Okay. >> putting my shirt on. >> you put something on? Okay. >> Does this offend you? >> Should I get out? >> I just didn't want to make you stand out here in just a bikini. That's why I'm asking. Okay. Why don't you get out of the car for me? >> Can I get out here? >> Yeah, right here. Stand right in front of that Chevy symbol, right there. And you're how old again? Oh. What are you What's underneath the seat? What were you just grabbing underneath the seat? Okay. >> I have to call my mom for my insurance, though. that >> Is it your mom's car or yours? >> No, this is my This have the car but she has I have my have a picture of it. >> Okay. 4 Echo 10 Central 4 Echo 10 20 for the rest of my traffic stop. >> We were just trying to come up >> Indiana 2 Tango Kilo 552 Oscar Alpha India on a white Ford 57. Go ahead and stand over by the tire for a second. You said you're 18 years old, correct? And you're in possession of alcohol and you're under the age of 21, correct? Turn around and put your hands behind your back. You're under arrest. Shorts. >> You have shorts in there? I did. >> 4 Echo 10 Central 10 - 11 Can you show the adult female 10-15 and 372nd unit? 10-15 600 372nd 4 4 10 >> Do what? >> She's sending it to you. >> She's sending it to you? Okay. You're free to leave if you want to. >> I put that >> Okay. Will you take a step back for me, please? >> Okay, please. >> Ma'am, can you have a seat on the bumper? I don't want to put you in the rain. >> You were like coming over here to get them out of the >> What? Take a seat on the bumper. I gave you an opportunity to get dressed. We're going to wait a minute now, okay? We're going to wait for second unit to get here. Do you want your phone to go with you? No? Where are you guys from? Are you everybody from Indiana? You don't have any ID on you? >> It's right there. >> Oh, thank you. Put your butt on the bumper, please. So, here's what's happening. So, I'm towing this truck. It's a special event zone. So, unfortunately, the governor just passed a bill 2 weeks ago that we're towing trucks and that the fines are increased and it's just an unsanctioned event. So, these are the consequences of that. Okay? So, go ahead and grab what you need to grab out of it, but we're going to be towing this. >> And are we going to be able to get it back? >> Yeah, you have to contact Prior's Towing for that. >> Cuz we we have to leave our hotel on Saturday. >> Do what? >> We have to leave our hotel on Saturday. >> Where's your hotel at? >> Uh it's like 45 minutes from here. We were just going to the beach and we were trying to get out of the rain. That's why we pulled in here. We didn't even know you were cops. Just trying to get out of the rain. >> That's the purpose of the unmarked, right? >> Makes sense. Can we call another buddy to come pick us >> To pick you guys up, yeah? >> Yeah. >> Mhm. I'm going to start gathering your belongings cuz it's being towed. >> Can I open this? >> What's your first name? >> He's going to open that. >> Abigail. Abigail, we're going to go stand over by that GMC. My body cam's a lot better than a phone. If you want a copy of it, you're more than welcome to it. So, obviously you want to record. So, that's why I'm saying my body cam's a lot better. >> Sounds good. >> You don't want this? I put it on here. Wash my hands like that. >> I don't want it. >> You know this could have gone a completely different way. All you had to do was stand there. >> So, here's the thing. This is a non-event. >> Yeah. >> It's a special event pop-up zone. Legislation came through that says anytime >> were we getting pulled over for? >> anytime there's a non-event in a special pop-up zone, they gave us the right to tow your trucks for unsafe equipment and everybody goes to jail for everything. >> Okay, but what were we pulled over for? >> Which you tell me what you like me to pick? Loud exhaust, the window tint, the tint on the front windshield. I mean, any I I just got here. I didn't even pull you over. I can see that's why I would pull you over. >> But that's legal from where we're at. >> Where are you at now? >> Indiana. >> So, you're not in Indiana anymore. >> Okay, you make a valid point, but >> See what I'm saying? >> Like even when you come down to different states, they >> So, you don't think this tint's darker? >> Probably is. But I'm dealing with you all right now. >> Yeah. >> See what I'm saying? >> Yeah, I guess. >> It is what it is and then apparently she passed out or something and it's blatantly obvious that a couple of y'all have been drinking today. Who's 21? Nobody? You are? So you're lucky you're not over there. >> For what? >> For providing him with alcohol. >> I didn't. >> You're the only one 21, right? >> I gave it to him? >> Exactly. I mean that's what I'm saying. It's all good. >> Abigail. I'm standing right here. I didn't. Well, you don't want anything else to go with you after the jail cuz you're going to jail. You don't want your phone? You don't want your >> I'll take your phone with you. >> Booty. >> Unless you know Booty's number. >> Booty. >> I need my >> What is she going to do with like Do you want it with you? >> You're going to have to post bond. Can you guys take a step back for >> How much is that show? >> $500. >> Does anybody got $500? >> He do. >> Do you want your phone or no? >> No, I will take it. >> Do you want your phone or no? >> No, I'm good. I don't want to call nobody. >> So who's it going with? Okay. Just the driver has to stay until I can issue the site, okay? But everybody else is free to leave. I said just you have to stay for a few minutes while I write the citation. Just take a step over there for me, okay? But everyone else is free to leave. >> I don't want them recording. >> You don't want them recording? >> I don't want >> I don't know. Maybe to document a fun time, I'm not sure. To them it is cuz there's no one else claims the beer that you were drinking all by yourself. >> The 18-year-old driver was placed under arrest and transported to the county jail for booking. The open containers were disposed of at the scene and her vehicle was moved as her day at the beach officially came to an end. For choosing to keep alcohol at her feet during a routine drive, she was hit with a criminal charge of possession of alcohol by a person under 21. She is currently awaiting her day in court and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
