On July 12th, 2024, a routine shoplifting call at a local Dick's Sporting Goods quickly turned violent. A woman packed over a thousand dollars of clothes directly into her empty backpack, leading to a tense confrontation right near the exit doors. But, when responding officers ordered the suspect to stop, her arrogant attitude and her sudden choice to fight back turned a simple store theft into an intense physical takedown. >> The item in the backpack was actually open and completely empty. She's been in the fitting room with 19 Adidas product, came out, it's actually packed. >> Hi. >> Hello. >> You open up your backpack? >> Why? >> Cuz you have items in there that don't belong to you. >> That's not true. >> Okay, well go ahead and open your backpack then. >> No, I don't have to. You don't have anything for you. I don't even know why you're approaching me. Out of everybody in the store, and I've been in the dressing room, I've looked at everything that I wanted. >> Oh, that's what you're doing. All right, we're not going to play that. Just turn around and put your hands behind your back. >> No. >> All right, come on. >> Hey, bro, chill. >> Stop. >> I'LL LET YOU GO. >> WHY DID IT HAVE TO TURN INTO THAT? >> WHY WOULD YOU TURN it into that? >> Because you ran from me. Now you're going to go to jail. >> You're tripping. >> Cuz you're now going to go to jail. >> I don't want to go to jail. >> Because you stole stuff. >> steal anything. >> What's in this bag then? >> Items that I have that belong to me. >> That all belongs to you? It has tags on it? >> Yes. I've been to the register already. >> anything on you that's going to poke me or stick me? >> No, sir. Those are what I wanted to pay for. >> What for? >> Uh, because it's easier to carry. I don't have a bag. >> Yeah, we're good. We got to have Can you start me another supervisor? >> What the >> Let's get her in the car. >> Okay, first of all, that's my backpack. >> Why did that have to happen? >> I don't know. Why did you force it? >> Come on. So, you're going to steal and then act like it's my fault? >> No, I'm tripping on you because you're bugging. >> Okay, you're right. Should I just let you steal and walk out of here with a bunch of stuff? >> Who said I was walking out with it? >> It was in your book bag. >> And? My wallet is right there. You don't know what Sir? >> You have a weapon? >> Yes, I do. >> Where at? >> I [ __ ] put it in my bag. >> Where at? >> In my pants. Thomas, I'm calling my lawyer. >> No, not now. Now it turns to a felony. You're going to jail. >> What do you mean? >> What do you mean what do you mean? >> Why you can't just give me a summons? You're not chasing >> You might have over a thousand dollars worth of stuff here, right? >> though. If you check, I promise you it's not. >> Like the same one that's on you, probably over a hundred bucks. >> It's pretty expensive. I'll tell you I don't have over a thousand dollars worth of stuff. You can check. >> No, come on. >> And if you check, can I please get a summons? >> No. >> Why not? >> If you were to cooperate from the very beginning, yes, maybe. Possibly. >> But you didn't give me a chance to. You instantly started harassing me like I did something. >> of stuff that you didn't come in with. You could have opened your bag and then it would have been it. You would have got a summons. I guarantee you, if you would have been cooperative with me, instead you pulled away and tried to run from me. >> Sir, I can't this. My mom just died and my birthday I'm just trying to make ends meet. >> Get your feet in. >> Please, sir. >> We'll talk about it. Get your feet in, okay? >> Will you please you talk to me with it? >> We'll talk about it in a second, but you got to get your feet in. >> I'll do that. But please, sir. I'm just I'm having a hard time >> What's the total dollar amount? >> Uh 1,019.97. >> Okay. >> I don't know what that does. >> Yeah, we waited as long as we could. We really >> Brother, I appreciate it, man. Like, just this [ __ ] nonstop. So, like, the fact that And then the other group came so quickly, man. That >> It was awesome. >> Yeah. >> Cuz oh girl, I saw the bags and I saw in the corner, I'm like, "No." >> No. >> Yeah. We were stuck on an accident when this came out. Got here as fast as we could. >> Um my home address? >> Yeah. Yeah, cuz this will be in place of you. That's not like public or anything. >> Right on. I have to put Tire I It's so weird. Should I put Akron? This is Akron, right? >> Yeah. The store is. >> It's just I mean, they Our company says it's kind of the Falls. I mean, that's the store. >> Yeah. It's weird. It's As far as I know, the store is Akron, but I think the parking lot's the Falls. >> Okay. Actually, yeah. >> We got it all figured She did have the hoodie in her pants. >> I mean Oh, awesome. Who took a picture with you guys earlier? >> I have no idea. >> They just walked up. He's like He kept saying something about a picture. I'm like, "Sure." And then they're like, That was That was odd. >> What else do you need? Total amount or anything like that? >> If you have it, that'd be cool. >> It's on that sheet. >> And it says 1,084. >> Okay. 1,084. >> 97. >> Only 12? >> 12, yeah. Okay. Appreciate it. >> And then can I get a report number? >> All right, what's going on today? I I can I Oh, you're taking clothes to pay for rent? Okay. Well, I'm not really here for that. I'm here because you and the officer got in some sort of tussle. That's what I'm here for. So, can you describe what happened? >> Uh What was it basically I I tried to run. Grabbed my arm. I got away. And then um He grabs me by my hair. My shoes came off and he started throwing me on the wall, so >> You didn't end up on the ground? >> No. >> Never ended up on the ground? >> No. >> You injured in any way? >> No. >> No. Okay. So, uh you said you started running away. Were you walking away at first? >> Yeah. >> Was he telling you to stop? Like come talk to me, anything like that? >> How do you say come talk to me or anything? >> You said you were running away. Why didn't you just stop and talk to him? >> Because he he approached us to me and they automatically accused me of stealing and I was in the dressing room the whole time trying on clothes. >> Well, you just told me you were stealing. >> I know. >> So, you can't be wrong about the character assumption. >> worried about that. I'm just like it's just why did they have to think that I was stealing? You know what I'm saying? I'm just wondering what made them call the police as I was trying on all the clothes. >> Cuz you're walking around with stuffed bags. It's kind of an indicator. I mean, you had a you had a thing of Timberlands. How do you conceal Timberlands? >> I just put those in the bag before they walked through the door. >> Well, you get what I'm saying. You had a bunch of stuff. All right, so let me get this straight. They went to talk to you, you started running away. >> No, I walked. >> Oh, you walked at first? >> Yeah. >> And then you said, well, the first time you said you ran. When did you start >> No, I said I walked first. And then I ran. >> And what happened that led you to start running? >> Um, the sounds of the cuffs. >> Hearing the sounds of the cuffs and that's what made you run. Did you hear him telling you anything at any point, like stop? >> Uh I don't remember. >> So, you started to run when you heard the cuffs, he grabbed you by your hair and pushed you into a wall? >> Yeah. >> You but you didn't go to the ground. You said you don't have any injuries. >> No, sir. >> Once you were on the ground, did they do anything to you other than put you in handcuffs? >> No, sir. >> No. All right. Anything else that I didn't ask that you feel is important for me to know about the interaction between you and the officer? >> No. >> Nothing else you want to tell me? >> No, sir. >> All right. Thank you. >> Jania, is your car here? >> Yes, sir. >> Is this your bag? >> Yes, sir. >> Which one's your car? >> It's up against the wall over here. Why? >> On the other side over there? >> Yeah, over here. >> All right. Right behind me over here? >> Yeah. Am I getting a summons, sir? >> So, I would have but the problem is you have another resisting arrest warrant. >> What are you talking about? >> Warrant. >> A warrant? >> Yes, you have a warrant for resisting >> For what? >> For resisting arrest. >> Where? You said what? >> Resisting arrest. >> For where? >> Hold on a second. >> Cuz I didn't resist arrest on anything. Can you please tell me where it's at? >> Is this your car over here? >> Yes, sir. >> I'm going to throw your bag in there. Do you want your wallet in there, too? Do you want your wallet in there, too? >> Yes, sir. I I really don't understand why I have a warrant. My PO told me I don't have any warrants. Why do I have a warrant for? >> All right, your bag and your wallet are going in the car, okay? >> All right, yes, but I'm serious. My PO told me I don't >> I will. Let me put this in your car first, all right? >> Okay. >> All right, I put it in your front seat. Unlock the door, okay? >> All right, thanks. >> There's your keys. >> Now, what do I have a warrant for? >> Uh hold on a second. Let me find your phone. >> I heard it ringing. >> You did? >> Yeah. It's somewhere inside the car. Okay, sir, I've been to jail every time they took me. I've never not got away. And I promise you that. There shouldn't be any warrant. >> phone or did you throw it in my car? Okay. Do you want uh your phone to go with you or do you want it to stay in the car? >> I want it with me. >> All right. I'll grab it. >> Is it in the car? >> Yeah, it's in your book bag. >> No, just leave it in there. >> You don't want it? >> No. >> You sure? >> Yeah. >> All right. >> Wait. Wait. I I >> Do you need to make a call? >> Yeah. >> All right. I got your phone and your keys, all right? >> Okay. Listen, there should be no warrant for me. >> So, they can figure it out once you get there. >> Where Which one are you taking me to? >> Summit County. I wanted to give you a summons, but the fact that you >> It doesn't make any sense to me. Like, that that should be cleared. My PO told me I don't have any warrants. They grabbed me that same night because they pulled me over because my lights weren't on, supposedly, but I know they were. And then they harassed me. They beat me up, tased me, broke my nose, took me to Summit. They said they didn't want me. And then they took me to Canton instantly. I was there for half a month. >> You were there for half a month? >> Yeah. I shouldn't have any warrants. They took me for everything I did. I got a traffic violation and I had a warrant out in Canton. I got probation violation from the traffic violation. >> The traffic and uh what's this thing around? What was that a acronym? They have >> Yeah, exactly. >> They have nothing to do with Canton. >> Exactly, that's what I'm saying. I shouldn't have that. They already took me to jail for that. You said what? >> What was that resisting arrest for? >> It was the same night I got the charge for the traffic violation. >> How did you get a warrant from Akron? You can't get a warrant from Akron. >> That's what I'm saying. I shouldn't have a warrant. It doesn't make sense. They already took me to jail for that. They took me to like the sheriff's part. I went through the body machine. They took all my jewelry and said that that they didn't want me. It was a black lady who was up there. And then they were like, "Oh, but you did something in Canton. So, we're going to ship you out to Canton." And that's what they did. And they even sent me >> the time where officers told you to get out of the car, you wouldn't, they said they'd break the car window, and then you said if you broke the car window, you would run. >> Yes. I was scared. If they break my window, would you sit somewhere and let somebody break your window or would you drive away? >> I'd get out of the car cuz the police are telling me to get out of the car. Then my window doesn't get broken, and then I don't get into the anything on that. >> They did a investigation against police force on me anyway. So, I know I don't have no warrant. They already They gave me a piece of paper in the mail saying an investigation of brute force or something force has been done against me. Has been has has has has has been done including me or something like that. >> Got you. >> And that was after I got out of jail. And then somehow when I got out of jail and checked on my mom's vehicle that's in impound only one of the windows was [ __ ] up. I went back a second time and now the other window was broken, too, and there's glass everywhere. >> How long? >> Yes. When I went in there, the only thing they did was rip off the glass window that I had attached to the driver's side. When the second time when I got out that was like that and then the second time I went back to go to impound to grab all the rest of my stuff out of the car the passenger window was broken with glass everywhere. And I had my window taped up on the driver's side. It was just a piece of um Plexiglas. Is there any chance we can figure this out tonight? Because I know for a fact I I I did what I was supposed to do. After they ripped me out of the car they took me here. They took me to the sheriff's part. I went through the body machine. >> Hold on a second. >> After her arrest, the suspect was transported to the local county jail. During transport, she continued to scream at deputies and refused to cooperate as they pulled her from the patrol car. She was ultimately booked and charged with grand retail theft over $1,000, resisting arrest with violence, and felony battery on a law enforcement officer.
