I didn't [ __ ] do anything wrong. Stop. >> Hey. Hey. >> Why do I have to stay in jail for something like this? I can't hurt someone. I mean, this is crazy. I've never been in trouble in my entire life. Why do I have to spend the night in jail? Shoplifting might seem like a small crime, but some people managed to turn it into a full-blown disaster by refusing to cooperate, trying to run and denying any responsibility. Today, we're diving into some of the worst shoplifters ever caught on body cam to see if they finally learned their lesson. >> Take your hands out of your pocket. Turn around. >> What am I getting arrested? On April 15th, 2024, police detained a man named Darius outside a dollar store after a report of shoplifting this way. >> Fox 31 detained. >> What did I do? >> Do you have any weapons on you? >> No, sir. >> You have any drugs on you? >> No. >> You mind if I search you? >> Yeah, I mean that's fine. Make sure nothing gets damaged. >> Am I getting arrested? That is you're being detained for an investigation. Okay. Not really worried about any kind of weed. Darius insists he didn't steal anything, saying he only went into the store by mistake after being told not to enter. Officers note he's carrying multiple items, including condoms and an ankle monitor, while claiming to be doing community service hours. phone over here. My phone that I was carrying with you. >> Yeah. Where'd you get this from? >> Your house. You walked all the way over from your house. >> I didn't steal anything from the store. I was just in the store. She told me not to go in there and I I forgot and I went in and I walked right out. Sir, I didn't do anything. I worked for >> All right. We're going to figure that we're going to figure all that out. That's that's part of the investigation. >> All right. This your idea? Are you Darius? >> All right. Little bit of weed. I'm not worried about that. Came prepared. Huh? That's a lot of condoms. What's up, man? >> Can you pull up my >> Yeah, we'll get there. We'll get there. You just got pants on and you got shorts on this bus. ankle monitor. Where is that? >> Right there. >> I'm just trying to do community service hours. >> No, that's cool. >> You forgot she told me not to come in the store the other day. >> Okay. >> I forgot she told me. Police speak with store employees who explained Darius has a history of minor thefts, including stealing beer and crackers. There's no current video evidence from this particular store, but staff want him officially trespassed from the property. Dispatch notes said he grabbed something and left. This is the only thing that's brand new. >> Um the two drinks he had, they could have been open there, too. Huh? >> Is that what he supposedly took? >> That's what I think he took. >> I was going to go over there. >> Oh, okay. Just hang on here. >> This is Darius Reese. >> Oh, >> you know him? >> Yeah. >> Cool. >> Call the probation officer. >> I'll go over there and uh Just say 10:12 and uh I'll go in there and talk. I'll leave it unlocked if needed. [Music] >> What the hell did he do? >> Supposedly steal from here. Well, I said we we thought, but y'all never do that. >> Got video. >> There's no video. I just told him that we needed to have him trespass cuz the other day he's done it. >> Did he take something? >> The other day he took >> We were being told he took something this morning. >> Well, we think he grabbed something from the makeup aisle, >> but there's no video. >> No. And but he was in the store also. No, there's not where he goes. There's no video. So, you don't have any evidence that he took anything today? >> No. I told him I needed him trespass because uh the other day he came in and I asked him, I said, "What's in your pocket?" He pulled it out and it was crackers and he's like, "Oh, I bought these earlier." I'm like, "Just >> Yeah. He had a package of like a cup of Oreos." >> Yeah. The um the cup of Oreos. >> Like a cup of Oreos. >> Do you have Do you sell that here? >> He might have got those in Bravo. He just came out of Bravo. It just came out of Braavos, but I don't know that he stole it from Bravos. >> Yeah, we don't I don't think we sell the It's the cup with the lid. >> Yeah. >> Officers contact a nearby grocery store, which confirms on security footage that Darius stole Oreos and a drink earlier that day. The store agrees to press charges like Yep. [Music] Uh-huh. >> Yeah. Right here. Got it. [Music] >> Yeah. >> Yep. In his pocket. >> Mhm. >> Do you want Do you want to press chargers? >> Uh, and what about the the the drink? He I wasn't sure if that cuz it was open. I wasn't sure if he took that too. But yeah. Do you want to press charges? >> Uh because he's wearing an ankle monitor. >> Let me call the the manager the website manager. Let me see. He know everybody. >> Okay. >> Yeah. He took the drink and the Oreos from here. Now I'm confronted. >> You check. >> Okay. Well, we're going to hook him up for a retail theft and I'll I'll swing him by. You should get the bracelet. >> Thank Yeah, he's got it. He's got it. >> So, yeah. Um, he's confirming whether or not >> Police determined Darius is on probation and wearing an ankle monitor since he's now caught stealing again. This counts as a violation of probation. They decide to arrest him for retail theft and probation violation. >> Say anything? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay, we got uh one guy here in the in the car. Go check and and see check if he coming a lot here or maybe you know him. Well, >> I'll give you his name. This is >> This is him. Rude. >> He used to hang out around here. Now he's telling me, >> but he's he's stealing from you. >> They see him. His >> address is Zephr Hills. >> Well, yeah, he used to be up around here. Now he's >> How old is he? >> Your age? >> Born in 01. 23. >> That ain't >> my age, man. >> 23. >> That's a young fella. Where is he at? Is he out? >> He's in the back of my car in handcuffs. >> What are we going to do? We need to do something. >> That's what I'm That's what I'm confirming. And I And I agree. >> Trespass him. >> He's on probation. >> Trespass him. Yeah, >> I can trespass him, but I want to arrest him. >> But that's up to you because you're the You're the You're the victim. He's stealing from your company. He's >> He stole from here or what? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Today. >> Get him, man. Bro, >> you the man. >> Okay. >> Who's you? >> It's up to him. >> Cuz he called you to like you were going to make the decision. >> If he's stealing stealing. >> Okay. Yeah, he's stealing. violation of his probation, right? >> Officers inform Darius that he's trespassed from both stores and read him his Miranda rights. He appears remorseful and agrees not to return to the stores. >> Come back. >> All right. All right. All right. All right. Stay there. What's up, bro? >> Hey, only thing we're doing is a trespass. That's That's it. >> About getting arrested, sir? >> I don't know about that. But the only thing I know that this store is doing is trespass. It's not even anything. >> I'm sorry. >> Pay attention. >> He's got something to tell you. >> Whatever they got with them, they ain't got nothing to do with us. You know what I'm saying? The only thing that we're doing is trespass. That's it. >> Yes, sir. I understand. I won't come back anymore. >> All right. So, so you understand you're not welcome here. If you if you do come back, you're subject to arrest for trespass after warning. >> Darius tearfully explains he's homeless and struggling to find food. He says he only took the cookies and drink because he was hungry, not out of malice, and that he's just trying to complete his community service hours. >> I just I just picked up food and and it's hard to to eat food and stuff and I literally was just trying to do my community service hours. I'm not >> What are your community service hours? What are you supposed to be doing? >> Right there at the thrift store, sir. >> At the thrift store? Yes, sir. >> Right. Right over there. Yes, sir. >> What are you supposed to do? >> Just go um put up clothes and help volunteer for some hours for my for I'm on I'm on in command. I'm on probation. I really don't I have I'm on 5 years I get 5 years of jail if I go back to jail, sir. >> So, what do what are the terms of your probation? Do you know them all? >> Yes, sir. It's um I can't I can't um be around like any firearms or I I have to be where I'm supposed to be. I have to I can't, you know, stuff like that. Okay. Drugs. >> Drugs. Um, marijuana. But I I just found that I wasn't I wasn't smoking her. >> You just found it? >> Yes, sir. >> Where did you find it? >> Um, coming here on the way here, sir. >> I found it and I just picked it up and I was going to give it to my girlfriend. She smokes and stuff. >> Okay. So, do you understand that's possession? >> You understand that, right? They're not prosecuting you for stealing, but we're prosecuting for violating your probation. because you have the marijuana on you. You understand? >> I mean, those are those are your decisions. >> Just pick it up on the ground, sir. I didn't >> you you picked it up. >> Police tell Darius the theft is on video. And despite his explanations, it's still a violation. He's ultimately arrested for shoplifting and marijuana possession, which may lead to revocation of his probation and possible jail time. As soon as you saw me, you hesitated. >> I was straight up with you. So I said, "I got some marijuana and stuff." I >> No, I mean before I even got up to you, before I even walked up to you, as soon as you walked out and saw me sitting there, you hesitated cuz you knew you did something wrong. I know you stole the cookies. I know you stole the drink. I watched it on video. I'm not even ask you, you know, if you did it or not. You already said it's hard for you to get food and stuff. Okay, I get it. But that's on video. I mean, you can be honest with it. You're saying you're not trying to steal, but you did steal, even though that's not what you're being prosecuted for today. Do you understand where I'm coming from? >> All right. I got a couple of things to confirm and we'll go from there. >> Trouble. Okay. You might want to be more specific with some I had some marijuana on me. You had >> marijuana on you? Okay. >> Um, you caught shoplifting. >> You're going to have to speak up. Why can't you car? >> We just had this conversation. Be honest. >> What did you have on you that you didn't pay for? >> I didn't have anything. I just had I just had some money on your marijuana. So, >> okay. Where were you supposed to be on your schedule? um on my schedule. I had it um on my schedule. So So I was doing my community service. >> Where were you when they found you? >> I was just in the store using the restroom. >> Okay, that sounds very convenient. How far is that from the community service location? >> It's literally right in the same closet like like this closet. It's like right the next door. So >> Okay. You don't get to go anywhere else. >> Use the restroom where you're doing your service. Had you already signed in? >> No, ma'am. I didn't sign in. I was still walking on my way up there. I just stopped by cuz they don't have toilet paper in my police officer. Not my not I'm in the community service. >> Okay. Well, I can tell you're not being real upfront and honest because they're charging you with I believe shoplifting, right? >> They didn't want to charge him, but I watched it on video. He he took it. >> Oh, okay. So, what did he take? >> Some Oreos and a drink. >> Okay. >> I'll put that on the box, too. So, >> you got to be honest. Although the store initially considered only trespassing him, confirmation of the theft on video and his possession of marijuana led police to arrest him for retail theft and probation violation. Stealing, even out of desperation, can lead to serious legal consequences and worsen one's situation. Honesty and seeking help are always better paths than breaking the law. Look out for the next shoplifter who will react even more aggressively. >> There's no sit down. >> I didn't steal anything. >> I will steal anything. >> At a Walmart on Janu 15th, 2023, a mother was arrested after encouraging her 5-year-old daughter to steal toys. Store employees quickly alerted authorities. >> Oh my. Oh my god. I didn't steal anything. >> My car. Then look for my receipt. I dropped it. I've already been through this aisle. I see. I'm here all the time. >> Okay. Where's your receipt? >> I don't I dropped it then. I didn't steal anything. >> So, you weren't bagging the stuff up in the toy section? >> No. >> Then what? I guess I guess I was imagining things. >> Yeah, you were. I was not. >> Just hang tight. >> As the mother is detained, her young daughter cries and pleads with officers not to take her mom to jail. The officers explained that paying afterward doesn't undo the crime since she already concealed unpaid merchandise. >> So, why don't you why don't we go into the security office and >> put my daughter in the car then? >> Huh? >> No. No. No. No. No. No. >> Okay. We're all going to go to the security office right now. We're going to review the footage. >> In front of my kids. >> Okay. Stop. >> Please don't put me in handcuffs. Okay. Don't put me in. Don't put me in handcuffs. Stop. Okay. Don't put me. >> Okay. Don't put me in handcuffs. >> I I will put you in handcuffs cuz you're not listening. You're walking away from me. >> I'm detaining you right now. >> I'll give you my I'll buy it again. I have my debit card. >> Security and officers speak to the woman's husband, who arrives with another receipt and says he gave her a gift card. However, officers proceed to review the surveillance footage to confirm the theft. >> I will give you I bought that and I will give you my debit card. >> Please don't put my mind in jail. Please don't put my mind. >> We're going to the security office right now >> so we can review. It's okay, sweetie. My car wasn't Can I at least pay for it again? >> Right now? No. >> Yeah. Why? I've already paid for it. >> I've already paid for it, >> sir. I paid for it. >> We'll We'll see. >> Okay. But I've been in here twice today. Please let me pay for it again. Then I have money. >> We're going to watch a video. >> Have a seat with mommy. >> Why not? I already bought this stuff. >> I bought this two days earlier. >> It's not a lot. I have the receipt. >> Okay, mommy. Sit down. >> I have the receipt. >> Where is the receipt? Where is it? >> It was in the bag, dude. >> Sit down. Calm down. >> Well, then if it's in the bag, then we'll find it. Sit down. Calm down. >> Sit down. >> I didn't steal anything. >> I didn't steal anything, dude. >> Who is this? >> My husband here. >> Do you have a little brother? >> You have the other receipt? You have the other receipt to show them, please. I >> What's going on? >> What's going on? >> Hi, Mommy. >> So, your wife, we believe that your wife has uh concealed items. >> Okay. >> I gave her calm down. >> She's being detained right now. We're going to review the video. >> Okay. >> Okay. Do you have a receipt for the items? >> Yeah. >> Okay. another gave her a gift card. I understand. >> But do you does she have a do you have a receipt for the toys and stuff at the end? >> Yeah. >> I have no idea. Okay. >> So, whatever it is, >> hang tight. Sweetie, >> sweetie, you can come out with your daddy. >> The receipt for those other things that pay for it. >> Here's a receipt that he has. >> There's another one. Is there a fire? The suspect becomes emotional, insisting she already paid for some toys and claiming she was heading to the register. She pleads for mercy, saying she had money and didn't mean to steal, while her child watches the scene unfold. >> Just a minute. >> Okay. >> Yeah. This will be here. >> I was I was my Come on. >> I have the money right here. I have the money. Please, please give me a chance for it. >> It's too late for that. >> No, sir. There's my gift card. >> There's this right here. Meet me in uh AP, please. >> Guys, I was going to the register. >> Please. >> Frank, do you copy? >> How am I getting accused of something I didn't do? I didn't steal all that stuff. I have a receiver. >> Calm down. >> No, I'm not. Calm down. You did that in front of my kid. I have the receiver and the other things. Say hi. I'm going to take a deep for you. >> Don't for 115 29 by number. >> Whatever you want. I have money. >> The the third the third one. >> All right. You know, I'm close the door really quick. I pull a palette like I pull a palette you know when somebody that's what I see but I thought she would pay for it though you know that's it because I thought she would >> I'm sorry I >> you know just like when you're full >> just type >> officers read the woman her Miranda writes she acknowledges understanding them but grows frustrated arguing that her arrest over toys is unfair and claiming she was just going to her car to get her card >> have a lawyer uh and have him present with you while you are being questioned. If you cannot afford to hire a lawyer, one will be appointed to represent you before any questioning. If you decide to answer any questions without a lawyer present, you have the right to stop answering any time until you talk to a lawyer. Do you understand? >> Yeah. >> Okay. >> But you don't get bonded out right away. >> Uh yeah. >> Unless you you're a convicted felon. Here I am. >> Well, then no. >> Why are you guys arresting me? >> A squishallow. >> Why are you arresting me? >> The suspect continues to argue, saying she has plenty of money and accusing police of wasting resources. Officers remain calm as she's taken into custody, still insisting she did nothing wrong and asking to speak with her child. to get my card out of my car. >> Then you should have left the card. >> Then I apologize. >> I shouldn't be arrested for this. I was getting my other money out of my car. >> Are you going to give me another charge? >> People killing each other here in Naples and worry about me going another car with plenty of money. I don't need to be freaking accused of theft. items. >> We don't we don't know what% all this all this is stolen. We got to we got to figure this out. Just wait until you see this next one. >> On February 24th, 2022, officers responded to a Walmart after reports of a woman stealing. They arrived just in time to see her leaving the store with unpaid merchandise stuffed in her cart. >> You didn't pay for clothes. Oh, I'll pay for it. So, >> who are they? >> The Walmart loss prevention people. The people who work here. >> Oh, okay. >> It's their job. I mean, we're going to figure it out. They got to show us the evidence. >> Mhm. >> And you said you never been in trouble before? No. >> You ever been arrested for shoplifting? >> No. If you ever been arrested for shoplifting, well, I mean, the worst it will be is a ticket, so you ain't got nothing to sweat, >> okay? >> I mean, it still sucks, but you're not going to jail. So, >> but at the end of the day, I appreciate you guys for doing what y'all did instead of making it a big scene cuz I have my kids appreciate. >> There ain't no reason to be a big scene. >> And I appreciate you also, man. Cuz you know, a lot of people are rude to people who don't even know. >> Oh, she's rude most of the time. I'm just kidding. Are you pulling up now? >> I'm trying. And our system this way is very slow. >> But yeah, I always come here and spend a lot of money though. >> How much stuff do you think she didn't even pay for? >> I'm not mad at the price amount. These are not. I know this was one of them. I'm saying like not trying to be rude to you. >> No. Well, that's the thing. I mean, like I said, >> we still have a job to do. >> It is what it is. >> I mean, you paid you paid for most of it, but >> there's one. >> Like I said, you'll probably get a citation and you'll probably get barred from here and that'll probably be the end of it. 13. >> While the suspect had paid for a few items, she also walked out with $187 worth of unpaid merchandise. So, here's her ID. >> They're still going through all the stuff now. She's got her baby with her. She's being cooperative. I told her that she's probably just going to get a citation, get barred. So, >> I'll go to those. >> Yep. >> All right. So, we were looking at your criminal history. It doesn't look like you had any shoplifting. Look like you got some thefts that got dismissed. Yeah, there was like um >> seven situation being this girl. >> It doesn't matter because it's only shoplifting can matter. So what she's doing is she's working on the citation. So you'll get a citation. You don't have to go to court or something. >> Can I pay for that stuff? >> No, that's not how it works. I mean, once they catch you, they catch you. So just let them do their thing. And you can take the stuff you paid for, obviously, but uh just let them do their thing. I'm going to leave my bag in there. >> Okay. >> The officer's got her ID right there. >> I got to go. >> Huh? They just that's their policy once they stop you.
