Title
Boat Capsized 5 Miles From Shore. Why Having Safety Gear Matters.
Description
Your boat capsizing is terrifying no matter what, but having the required safety gear can help keep a bad situation from getting worse. This family had all they needed to call for help and stay afloat until we arrived.
It's far better to have this gear at the ready and not need it than to need it and not have it.
The list includes:
A USCG-approved PFD for every person aboard
A sound-producing device
A visual distress signal
A fire extinguisher
And while not legally required we highly suggest you have a marine VHF radio and a phone as a backup so you can contact emergency services.
For a comprehensive list based on the size of your boat visit Florida Fish and Wildlife's Website.
