Narcissist Kills Teacher To Steal His Truck, Thinks He's Going Home (He's Not)
Description
Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation.
The Background
Victim: Kyle J. Martz, 35, of Walla Walla; Whitman College graduate and international student adviser.
Defendant: Colby J. Hedman, 23, transient with ties to Heppner, Oregon; no known address.
Relationship: Police said the two did not know each other. No motive was released.
Martz lived with a roommate at 331 S. Fourth Ave. in Walla Walla.
The Crime
Date/location: July 8, 2019, at Martz’s home in Walla Walla. Neighbors last saw him the night of July 7.
Hedman admitted striking Martz multiple times with an ax. Court records said the body was later found dismembered in a cooler on the property, and Martz’s Toyota pickup was stolen.
Hedman fled to Oregon the same day, took additional vehicles near Baker City, led police on a chase, crashed, and was arrested that night.
Records noted a newly locked garage, bloodied tools nearby, and bleach odor in the home. Hedman had borrowed an ax and shovel from neighbors that day.
The Investigation
A roommate called police around 6 p.m. after finding Martz missing and the house disturbed. Remains identified as Martz were found in a cooler in the garage.
Phone location data placed the victim’s phone near North Powder, Oregon. The stolen truck was found abandoned near Baker City. Neighbors identified Hedman.
After arrest, Hedman confessed to killing Martz with an ax and said he was still on the property.
After extradition, he was found not competent, received restoration treatment, then later entered a plea.
Conviction and Sentencing
Charged with first-degree murder and vehicle theft. Oregon charges were to be dismissed after return to Washington.
May 2020: pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with premeditated intent; vehicle-theft count dismissed.
July 23, 2020: sentenced to 333 months (about 27 years, 9 months), plus 36 months of community custody, with credit for 322 days served.
