Title
Arkansas State Police vs. U-Haul truck - suspect hit w/ several Taser probes after head-on collision
Description
Report: On 06/19/2026, at approximately 1830 hours, the Garland County Sheriff's Office requested assistance with a vehicle pursuit traveling west on US HWY 270/Albert Pike Rd. near Oak Grove Road. I, Trooper R. Plyler #357, responded to the area as the pursuit continued west on US HWY 270/Albert Pike Road. I caught up to the pursuit after the suspect, later identified as Christian Edwards, traveled north on Mountain Harbor Road until he reached Club House Drive. Edwards then traveled south on Club House Drive as I approached from the south. With my emergency lights, sirens, and dash camera activated, Edwards continued to drive towards my unit without stopping. To prevent the pursuit from continuing, I steered my patrol unit (Fleet #301012 Mileage 84,032) towards Edwards. Edwards failed to stop, forcing me to intervene and collide with the front bumper on the driver’s side of the vehicle Edwards was operating. After the collision, Dep. Charles Delahunt, Dep. Austin Perry and I gave Edwards several verbal commands to exit his vehicle and to show his hands. Edwards complied with showing his hands, but refused to exit his vehicle, stating, "I fear for my life". Edwards rolled his window up and locked the doors in an attempt to keep us from gaining access. At that time, I used my Arkansas State Police Department-issued ASP Expandable Baton to break the driver's door window to gain access to the vehicle. I reached through the broken window and grabbed hold of Edwards' right arm in an attempt to extract him through the broken window. Edwards was able to jerk loose from my grasp to move out of my reach. Dep. Delahunt was then able to unlock and open the door. After the door was opened, Edwards was removed from the truck, but started resisting arrest. While Edwards was resisting, I used my Arkansas State Police Department-issued Taser 10 S/N #T19F71987 and deployed seven cartridges. The first deployment made contact with his right shoulder. Several more cartridges were deployed in his back and chest area while he was rolling on the ground, with several not penetrating his skin. During the struggle, Edwards was able to get loose from the deputies at the time the last prob was deployed and struck Edwards in the lower abdominal area. The last prob caused total neuromuscular incapacitation. The incapacitation caused Edwards' body to lock up as he was taking steps. Edwards fell backwards during this event, causing the back of his head to impact the asphalt. The impact caused a laceration approximately 1 1/4 inches long on the rear of Edwards head. Edwards was placed into custody at that time without any further incident or additional force being used against him. After the altercation, Edwards removed the probs himself before the prob placements could be documented or photographed. Since Edwards was not wearing a shirt at the time of the altercation, he received several abrasions to his back and arms. Due to the abrasions, small cuts, and blood covering Edwards upper body, I was unable to locate and document any other puncture sites from the probs. After the scene was safe, I collected the probs and cartridges and placed them into evidence at Troop K Headquarters later that evening.
