Title
Man Who Met A British Woman Online Can’t Explain Why He Bought A Shovel..
Description
On October 10th, 2025, 32-year-old music tutor Sonia Exelby left her home in Portsmouth, England, and flew to Gainesville, Florida, to meet a man she had been talking to online for two years. When she missed her flight home, her partner and family raised the alarm, and a request from Interpol reached the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Her bank records led agents to a roadside assistance company in Ocala owned by 53-year-old Dwain Hall, who told them on the phone that she was just a customer whose card had been declined. He never mentioned the $1,200 that had gone through on her card two days later. Then her friend came forward with texts Sonia sent on October 11th, saying he kept taking her phone and that she was locked in somewhere with no signal. At the Airbnb she had booked in Reddick, investigators found what appeared to be blood on a comforter, long hair in the trash, and receipts for a shovel, rope and gun cleaner, bought the morning she landed. Store cameras showed who made the purchase: Dwain Hall. Airport cameras showed his black Jeep picking her up. In his interview, Hall admitted he spent the weekend with her but insisted she left in another car, and he denied having anything to do with what happened to her. When detectives told him they were already searching the woods, he asked for a lawyer. On October 17th, Sonia’s remains were found in a shallow grave. Hall was charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and fraudulent use of a credit card, among other charges. He has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent until proven otherwise, and his trial is scheduled to begin on November 5th, 2026.
