Title
PPB Wellness and the Muslim Advisory Council
Description
The Portland Police Bureau’s Muslim Advisory Council (MAC) was established in 2016 to foster trust and collaboration between officers and the Muslim community. By engaging in ongoing conversations and shared initiatives, MAC members help address community concerns while also contributing to the emotional and mental wellness of police personnel. Positive, meaningful interactions between officers and community members build mutual understanding, enhance organizational wellness, and strengthen public trust.
One key initiative involves officers participating in cultural engagement programs during their training. Through small group discussions with MAC and other advisory councils, officers gain firsthand knowledge of different communities in a non-enforcement setting. These interactions create a foundation of familiarity and respect, helping officers navigate diverse situations more effectively while reinforcing the department’s commitment to inclusive policing.
The benefits of these relationships extend beyond training. When real-world incidents occur, established trust allows for faster communication and problem-solving. Officers can rely on community contacts to facilitate cooperation, resolve conflicts, and ensure public safety. By integrating wellness and cultural awareness into daily policing, these partnerships support both officer well-being and stronger community connections.
