Title
STOLEN FIREARM from Memphis - Driver jumps guardrail after High Speed PURSUIT & PIT maneuver
Description
Trooper's narrative: On February 18, 2023 I, Trp. Gunner Fultz, was sitting stationary on Interstate 40 at the 284 mile marker on the westbound side. I observed a vehicle in my side mirror on the bridge behind me traveling at a high rate of speed and confirmed that the car was traveling 82 mph in a 55 mph zone with my rear radar. I could also see that the car had a headlight missing. I pulled into traffic to conduct a traffic stop but the car slowed down in an attempt to keep me from being behind him. I was able to get behind the vehicle, a white Pontiac Grand Am with temporary tags and turned my blue lights and siren on. The car did not stop, instead it sped up, initiating a vehicle pursuit. The car traveled at speeds up to 106 mph fleeing from me. Given the drivers speed and manner of driving I determined that it was too dangerous to let the pursuit continue. I performed a successful PIT maneuver causing the car to spin into the concrete barrier on the north side of the Interstate. I turned around and conducted a felony takedown, ordering the driver to show me his hands. The driver got out and ran over the guard rail and fled into the wooded area by the interstate. I could see that there were passengers still in the car and I could not pursue him. The passengers were handcuffed and I assisted Tfc. Morris in looking for the suspect but we were unsuccessful. Cpl. Martin searched the vehicle and found a Smith and Wesson Pistol under the passenger seat that was found to be stolen out of Memphis. The passengers were released without charges and the firearm was logged into evidence.
