Title
Detectives Grill Deputy Who Shot An Airman At His Own Door
Description
On May 3rd, 2024, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, an apartment leasing agent called the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office to report a disturbance that had turned physical, and Deputy Eddie Duran was sent to apartment 1401. The leasing agent told him a resident had heard an argument and a slap a couple of weeks earlier, but admitted she wasn’t sure which apartment it came from. With backup almost in the building, Duran chose to go up alone. At the door he stopped to listen, and later told investigators that all he heard was birds chirping. When the knocking started, he thought it might be his ex, and after a louder knock he grabbed his legally owned handgun and went to the door. Seconds after it opened, Duran fired about five times. Fortson’s girlfriend, whose phone was left facing the ceiling, heard him say he couldn’t breathe. Investigators later concluded the disturbance call that brought Duran to that door was false. In his interview with the sheriff’s office, Duran walked a captain through every second: why he didn’t wait for backup, why he didn’t announce himself on the first knock, and why he cleared the apartment before helping the airman he’d shot. He said he saw aggression in Fortson’s eyes, then admitted Fortson never said a word. Duran was fired after an internal investigation found his life was not in danger, and he was charged with manslaughter with a firearm. At trial, he testified that he believed he was about to be shot...
