DWI - Speeding DRUNK DRIVER gets the PIT Maneuver by Arkansas State Police #police #pursuit #chase
Description
Trooper Wingo's Report:
On July 12th, 2023, at approximately 7:44pm, I, Cpl Ryan Wingo #549, witnessed a red passenger car traveling westbound on
U.S. Highway 70 in front of me at a high rate of speed. As I attempted to catch up to the vehicle approximately a mile West of
the Garland/Hot Spring County line, I activated my front RADAR and locked the vehicle's speed at 81mph in a 55mph zone. A
computer check on the vehicle's plates, AR ANA40S, showed it registered to a Alberto Cruz Reyes of Glenwood, AR on a 2010
Red Toyota Corolla with an expiration date of April 2024. I activated my emergency lights and informed Troop K Dispatch I was
attempting a traffic stop on the vehicle near the Old Bonnerdale Store.
The vehicle continued to travel westbound on U.S. Highway 70. I activated my sirens and continued to give the driver a chance
to pull over. The driver continued to drive westbound. I informed Troop K Dispatch the driver was refusing to stop and I initiated
a vehicle pursuit.
The driver traveled on U.S. Highway 70 for approximately 6 miles at speeds ranging from 55-62mph. At the intersection with
South Bumblebee Road, the driver made an abrupt left turn onto South Bumblebee Road. I attempted a TVI as the vehicle
turned left but failed to make solid contact with the vehicle. The driver then sped up to speeds ranging from 50-62mph in a
35mph zone and driving recklessly as he drove down the middle of the street and in the oncoming traffic lane. At the
intersection with McGrew Road, the driver ran the stop sign as it turned left and started driving eastbound on McGrew Road at
a high rate of speed and driving in the oncoming traffic lane.
After passing Coca Cola Avenue, I performed a TVI as the driver drove in the oncoming lane and caused the vehicle to exit the
roadway into the eastbound ditch. The vehicle overturned and came to final rest facing east upright in the eastbound ditch.
While waiting for backup to arrive, the driver threw out a partially full beer can into the ditch.
After backup arrived on scene, we were able to take the driver into custody without incident and was identified as Hispanic
Male Alberto Cruz. A computer check on Suspect Cruz showed no license information but arrest information for a
DWI and Refusal to Submit to Chemical Testing by Glenwood PD on January 1st, 2023.
Pafford EMS responded to the scene and cleared Suspect Cruz of any injuries as well as Suspect Cruz refusing any further
treatment.
Suspect Cruz's vehicle also had empty and unopened containers of alcohol. Suspect Cruz had a strong odor of intoxicants
coming from his breath and he was unable to stand up straight or walk in a straight line.
Suspect Cruz was transported to Glenwood PD and was read his DWI Statement of Rights as he read along with the Spanish
translated DWI Statement of Rights. Suspect Cruz stated he understood his rights and agreed to a breath sample. At 9:11pm,
Suspect Cruz provided a BAC sample of 0.11% via Glenwood PD's BAC Machine.
Suspect Cruz was transported to Hot Spring County Jail and charged with:
Fleeing - Vehicle or Conveyance (D Felony), Driving
While Intoxicated - 2nd, Reckless Driving, No Driver’s License, Driving Left of Center, Fail to Obey Stop Sign, Speeding
(81mph in a 55mph Zone), and Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle.
