Title
Reckless driving with three kids in the car - Vehicle left in park starts rolling down highway!
Description
Trooper's Narrative:
On Thursday, April 27, 2023, I Trooper Walker Morphis was patrolling on United States Highway 278, near the soccer fields
west of Monticello. I was traveling westbound, and observed a black small passenger car traveling eastbound, at what
appeared to be a high rate of speed. I activated my front opposite radar, and observed that the vehicle was operating at a
speed of 72mph in a 60mph zone.
I attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle for that violation. The driver, later identified as Kevin Patterson, accelerated
at a high rate of speed, eastbound towards Monticello. I activated my emergency equipment and pursued the vehicle. Mr.
Patterson reached speeds of well over 100mph and was traveling very recklessly without due regard for the other vehicles on
the highway. I was able to catch up to Mr. Patterson and traveled behind him for approximately one-half mile before Mr.
Patterson came to a stop. Mr. Patterson exited the vehicle, but left the vehicle in drive. Officer First Class Ty People was able
to get the vehicle into park before it collided with anything.
After the vehicle was stopped and Mr. Patterson was taken into custody, it was determined that there were three minors in the
vehicle.
Charges:
Speeding
Driving on suspended license
Reckless driving
Fleeing
Endangering welfare of minor (three counts)
