Ignorant Killer Didn't Know Surveillance Cameras Were Watching Him
Description
Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation.
The Background:
Bruce Renault Fry (then ~47-48, of Minneapolis) had recently ended a roughly two-month romantic relationship with K.H. (Shequill Halbert’s sister).
K.H. reported that Fry had shown nude photos of her to others and had hit/pushed her.
On July 13, 2018, K.H. told her brothers D.H. and S.H. (Shequill Halbert, 24) about the mistreatment. The brothers went to Fry’s south Minneapolis apartment building earlier that evening, knocked, yelled threats (including intent to fight), and left after Fry did not open the door.
Motive centered on the confrontation over the photos and alleged mistreatment of their sister.
The Crime:
Later that evening (~10:43 p.m. on July 13, 2018), Shequill Halbert returned alone to the apartment building (1100 block of 8th Street S., Minneapolis).
Surveillance video (no audio) showed Halbert entering the vestibule and buzzing; Fry approached from the hallway with a knife already in hand (visible earlier as he exited/reentered via the rear).
After argument through the locked glass door, Fry opened it. Halbert pushed Fry; Fry stabbed him multiple times (torso, arm, forehead) with a small knife. Fry pursued as Halbert fled down the hallway.
Fight lasted ~1 minute on video; Halbert collapsed in the hallway from a fatal chest stab wound (medical examiner: cause of death was the chest stab wound; other wounds included forehead, face, arm defensive wound, and finger; alcohol level 0.20).
Fry returned upstairs briefly, then fled out the back door with a backpack/container, telling a neighbor not to say anything. Police found Halbert shortly after (~10:54 p.m.) via 911.
The Investigation:
Building surveillance captured the confrontation, stabs, pursuit, and Fry’s departure. Neighbor witnessed Halbert yelling challenges earlier and Fry fleeing.
K.H. and D.H. identified Fry from video. Fry arrested July 15, 2018; in a Mirandized statement he admitted the stabbing.
Cell-phone search (warrant) revealed post-incident texts about “emergency,” requests to pick up the phone, and numbers for criminal law firms.
Defense argued self-defense (no intent to kill); prosecution evidence included video showing Fry initiating contact with knife after Halbert pushed, pursuit of the fleeing victim, and prior threats from the brothers. No other suspects.
Conviction and Sentencing:
Trial (Hennepin County District Court, Jan. 22–29, 2019): Jury found Fry guilty of second-degree intentional murder (and the lesser-included second-degree unintentional felony murder). Self-defense instruction was given.
Sentenced to 480 months (40 years) prison (upward departure based on aggravating factor of prior conviction involving victim injury; prior Illinois murder, robbery, and drug convictions noted).
Direct appeal affirmed (Minn. Ct. App. July 20, 2020; further review denied). Later postconviction petition denied as procedurally barred (affirmed 2023). Fry remains serving the sentence.
