DWI driver in Lexus G35 flees Arkansas State Police and collides into a building #pursuit #chase
Description
Trooper's Report: On May 29, 2026, I, Trooper Gunner Fultz, was patrolling the area of Broadway and Walker in West Memphis when I observed a vehicle following extremely closely behind my patrol unit. I also observed the vehicle make a lane change without using a turn signal. I pulled behind the vehicle, a Lexus G35, and activated my emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle failed to stop and instead began accelerating. As the vehicle approached the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Broadway, it traveled through a red traffic signal at approximately 100 mph. As I positioned my patrol unit to perform a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI), the driver made a sudden left turn and began traveling the wrong way on Interstate 55. The Lexus subsequently struck two road signs before leaving the roadway and colliding with an industrial building. After the vehicle came to rest, I issued multiple verbal commands to the driver. The driver eventually exited through the driver's side door and stumbled out of the vehicle. I observed that he could barely stand, and his speech was slurred. I identified the driver as Shermon Harper and placed him in handcuffs. EMS personnel were allowed to assess and treat him on scene. Harper was transported by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital–Crittenden. Upon arriving at the hospital, I made contact with Harper and continued to observe slurred speech. I also detected a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his person. I offered Harper a chemical test, which he refused. Due to his apparent high level of intoxication and the injuries he sustained during the crash, I issued citations and provided him with a court date rather than transporting him to jail. Harper was charged with Open Container, Driving on a Revoked License, Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), Refusal to Submit to Chemical Testing, Criminal Mischief, No Seat Belt, Reckless Driving, Fleeing, and Improper Lane Change.
